چکیده
Abstract The evolution of resistance to the Bacillus thuringiensis ( Bt ) toxins by insect pests is a major threat technology. However, rate can be slowed with appropriate integrated management (IRM) strategies. Surveys were conducted identify alternate host species for Maruca vitrata (commonly called legume pod borer or that could serve as refuges Pod-Borer Resistant (PBR) cowpea in three West African countries (Ghana, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso). Survey sites included 25 northern Ghana, 44 52 north-central southwestern Faso. Alternate hosts identified from plant belonging Fabaceae family showed signs damage on tissues collected dissected. Larvae found during these dissections reared adult moths laboratory then species. plants including Crotolaria , Sesbania Tephrosia Vigna most frequently encountered among locations. Flowering podding overlapped flowering nearby (~200 m) crop. Abundance wild overlapping patterns crop locations have potential sustain ample numbers susceptible will mate possible resistant deter development. Further quantitative studies, however, are required each location determine if actual production sufficient PBR IRM strategy. If verified, this approach would compatible high dose/refuge strategy includes non- crops refuges.

Sex pheromone recognition and characterization of three pheromone-binding proteins in the legume pod borer, Maruca vitrata Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
Pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs) are essential for the filtering, binding and transporting of sex pheromones across sensillum lymph to membrane-associated pheromone receptors of moths. In this study, three novel PBP genes were expressed in Escherichia coli to examine their involvement in the sex pheromone perception of Maruca vitrata. Fluorescence binding experiments indicated that MvitPBP1-3 ...

Determination of Economic Injury Levels of Maruca vitrata in Mungbean
Maruca vitrata is considered to be one of the major pests of mungbean. The damage potential and economic threshold levels of Maruca vitrata larvae on mungbean were worked out at ARS, BARI, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. On an average single larva per m row reduced the yield to the extent of 154 kg/ha and 106 kg/ha in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 cropping seasons, respectively...

The Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa recently extended its operation to Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, the western part of Mali, Senegal and Sierra Leone. To estimate the number of people infected and blinded by the disease and to determine its distribution and severity in the extension area, 215 villages were selected, using a stratified random sampling procedure, and surveyed. All the ...
